The molds designed by SMC usually use hydraulic presses, and the upper and lower parts of the mold are fixed on the press. The mold includes a cavity and core, which is the same as an injection mold. The trial material is placed on an open mold, and then the press is turned off. The set temperature and pressure generated by the press cause the raw material to melt into the cavity of the mold. The trial materials for this type of mold are usually SMC, BMC, GMT. Therefore, we often refer to this type of mold as SMC mold, BMC mold, GMT mold.
 
SMC molds are designed as sheet-like thermoplastic materials, usually used for large products that require high strength. BMC materials are clustered, have short fibers, low shrinkage, and stable color. GMT materials are glass fiber thermoplastic materials that can be applied to various parts of automotive bodies, replacing traditional metal parts, reducing weight, and lowering costs. Unlike injection molds, SMC molds require heating rather than cooling. The usual heating methods include steam, oil, electricity, and high-pressure water.

The temperature of SMC mold design is usually between 140 and 160. When designing the temperature system of the mold, attention should be paid to keeping the temperature of the entire surface of the mold the same. The uniformity of temperature can reduce deformation, increase dimensional stability, and ensure the uniformity of the product surface. The manufacturability evaluation mainly includes the estimation of mold design and manufacturing costs, mold assemblability evaluation, mold part manufacturing process evaluation, mold structure and forming performance evaluation, etc.
